Memecoins look chaotic from the outside. Up close, most follow the same five-stage arc.

1. Ignition

A token launches with a story, a mascot and a small group of holders. Liquidity is thin, so a modest buy moves the price violently. This is where most of the gains and nearly all of the losses happen.

2. The attention spike

Influencers and aggregators pick it up. Volume multiplies, the chart goes vertical and the community mistakes liquidity for legitimacy. Thin markets cut both ways.

3. Distribution

Early wallets sell into strength. If the community is real, new buyers absorb it; if not, the chart prints a rounded top and never recovers.

4. Utility or fade

This is the fork in the road. Some teams ship something — a game, a tool, a marketplace — and the token becomes a real community asset. Most do not, and the project slowly goes quiet.

5. Legacy or listing graveyard

A rare few become cultural fixtures with lasting liquidity. The rest are delisted, forgotten, or revived briefly by nostalgia.

How to tell them apart

  • Holder distribution: a real community has many small wallets, not a few whales.
  • Developer activity: check whether code and product actually change.
  • Volume quality: steady organic volume beats sudden spikes.

Treat memecoins as entertainment with a budget, never as a savings plan.
